700 NYC Teachers Are Paid to Do Nothing

By Fox News 6/23/2009

"Hundreds of New York City public school teachers accused of offenses ranging from insubordination to sexual misconduct are being paid their full salaries to sit around all day playing Scrabble, surfing the Internet or just staring at the wall, if that's what they want to do. Because their union contract makes it extremely difficult to fire them, the teachers have been banished by the school system to its "rubber rooms" — off-campus office space where they wait months, even years, for their disciplinary hearings."

Out-of-work dads who feel lost may rediscover their children

By Dallas Morning News - Texas 6/21/2009

"Caution: Men Out of Work. That's more than a pithy play on words. It is a sobering sign of the times, a troubling trend that David Zinczenko, editor in chief of Men's Health, cleverly calls the "Great He-Cession." Turns out that men – much more than women – are feeling the brutal brunt of a gut-wrenching recession that's devouring male-dominated jobs in construction and manufacturing. "This troubling trend has been going on for several years, but it really picked up speed at the end of 2008," Zinczenko wrote in a recent USA Today article. "Of the 5.2 million people who've lost their jobs since last summer, four out of five were men. "Some experts predict that this year, for the first time, more American women will have jobs than men. And that's just furthering the decline of the endangered male." I'm not ready to jump on the "endangered male" bandwagon just yet. Not after enduring all the "endangered-black-male" hype for two decades. Let's see, we're so endangered that a black male now runs the White House. Nor am I ready to emphatically declare that this draconian turn in the economy is as glum and gut-wrenching as the Great Depression that gripped our parents and grandparents. We have more safety nets than we did eight decades ago, even if they aren't fail-proof. This much is clear: Too many men – and fathers – are losing their identity and well-honed sense of self-worth as the traditional, breadwinning, daddy-knows-best role gives way to more women taking charge at work and at home."

A Very Costly Kiss: Senior Denied Diploma

By Mike Krumboltz -- Yahoo Buzz 6/16/2009

"For teens, there is no greater joy than graduating high school. Shaking off the shackles of education and claiming that hard-fought diploma is truly an epic day. Unfortunately, for several students at Bonny Eagle High School in Maine, their natural exuberance has led to some surprisingly serious problems. On Friday night, when the senior class was waiting to graduate, excitement began to grow. Students bounced a large inflatable rubber duck. The noise level rose. And then came "the kiss." When called, one student walked on stage to receive his diploma and blew a kiss to his family. The school administrator, clearly not the sentimental sort, sent the student back to his seat ... sans diploma. The seemingly harsh punishment has sent the Web all aflutter. Searches on "student denied diploma" and "bonny eagle high school" are both through the roof. Additionally, blogs and news papers are chiming in with opinions on whether or not the administration overreacted. The student's mother has given interviews and is quite upset at her son's treatment. According to an article from Fox News the outraged mother said, "A bow, a kiss to your mom is not misbehavior."..."

No Child Left Behind = All Boys Left Behind

By Kari Henley -- Huffungton Post 6/4/2009

..."Now, before you get hot and huffy here about gender sexism, bear with me. This scenario is not far from the truth for our upcoming leaders of tomorrow. Since the 1970's feminism has opened up unparalleled opportunity for women to move forward in education and business. Is it perfect? No, but today's daughters are breaking glass ceilings and blazing trails. However, there are glass shards and dead end roads being inadvertently left for the men, and the boys. In the past ten years or so, the world of education has changed dramatically. The "No Child Left Behind Act" has been a disaster, and instead has turned into "All Boys Left Behind." Our nation's boys are not just slipping through the cracks, they are washing down the Grand Canyon without a paddle, and something must be done about it. Peg Tyre is author of the book, The Trouble with Boys, a #1 best seller, coming out in paperback this summer. Tyre spent five years researching the current education system from every demographic. She has a powerful, unrelenting story of how our young men are struggling, and describes a giant education gap that will affect every level of American life, in a very short period of time, as these kids grow up. Currently, boys are being "expelled" from preschool four times more than girls. They are 60% more likely to be held back in kindergarten, and twice as likely to be diagnosed with learning disabilities. Only 43% of young men are enrolled as undergraduates in college, girls are taking more AP classes in high school, and dominating as school valedictorians. In fact, a "dirty little secret" at many colleges and universities is the unspoken "new gender gap." Boys are being admitted to colleges with lesser qualifications than girls to keep the gender balance."

Japan's 'herbivore men' -- less interested in sex, money

By Morgan Neill -- CNN 6/8/2009
"They are young, earn little and spend little, and take a keen interest in fashion and personal appearance -- meet the "herbivore men" of Japan. Author and pop culture columnist Maki Fukasawa coined the term in 2006 in a series of articles on marketing to a younger generation of Japanese men. She used it to describe some men who she said were changing the country's ideas about just what is -- and isn't -- masculine. "In Japan, sex is translated as 'relationship in flesh,'" she said, "so I named those boys 'herbivorous boys' since they are not interested in flesh." Typically, "herbivore men" are in their 20s and 30s, and believe that friendship without sex can exist between men and women, Fukasawa said."

Simmering sex-ed battle heats up

By Kerry Benefield -- THE PRESS DEMOCRAT 6/7/2009

"A battle over sex education is under way in Sonoma County, pitting a longtime abstinence-only group against California Department of Education officials who say the group breaks state law when it teaches in the classroom. Among the players in the unfolding debate are the ACLU of Northern California, the California Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Free to Be, a Sonoma County group that has been promoting abstinence until marriage for 17 years. Caught in the middle are schools and districts that have hosted Free to Be speakers, including teens, to talk to students about the benefits of abstaining from sex until they are married. “The law specifically requires that all elements of sex education be balanced and accurate,” said Phyllida Burlingame, sex education policy director for the ACLU of Northern California, which has worked for months to keep Free to Be from giving presentations in public schools. “Students (need to) receive a consistent message that is based on science, that includes accurate, effective information,” she said."

Child Support Bill Stalls In GA

By Matt Willoughby --  North Carolina News Network - Raleigh, NC 6/4/2009

"A state Senate bill that would have allowed child support to continue through college is stalled in a House committee. The Senate approved the legislation but it ran into opposition in the House Juvenile Justice Committee. Senator John Snow, a retired judge, proposed continuing court ordered child support payments until the age of 21 if the child was in college."

Recession hits black men

By Gabriella Boston -- Washington Times 5/31/2009

..."Not so fast, says Andrew Sum, a labor-economics professor at Northeastern University in Boston: "Unemployment numbers will continue to be high." Those numbers are particularly gruesome among young, black males, which is beyond worrisome for the black family and community, experts in those areas say. For example, for black males ages 20 to 24, the unemployment rate is close to 50 percent; in the black community overall, men have absorbed 100 percent of the job losses 463,000 jobs since the recession started in November 2007. And even if the economy grows by the forecasted 1.3 percent, it's not enough to create job growth, says Mr. Sum, who doesn't anticipate any net job growth until 2011. "From a fatherhood perspective, it's going to have an enormous impact on an already fragile community," says Roland Warren, president of the National Fatherhood Initiative, a nonprofit group aimed at "increasing the proportion of children growing up with an involved, responsible and committed father." "So much of the traditional view of the father revolves around his ability to provide," says Mr. Warren, who writes a column for The Washington Times."

Hard times tear at child support

- News & Observer – North Carolina 6/1/2009

"For years, Steven Injasoulian and his former wife didn't need a judge to tell them how to pay for their 4-year-old son. They had a simple verbal agreement: Injasoulian provided health insurance and paid child support. But that was before Injasoulian, a surveyor, lost his job last June, as the housing industry in North Carolina began to stagger. Since then, Injasoulian has joined a fast-growing army in North Carolina: noncustodial parents struggling to make child-support payments without a paycheck. "I want to do right by my kid," said the young father."

Surviving: Layoffs put more dads in stay-at-home roles

By Brian Reisinger • Wausau Daily Herald • 5/23/2009

"...."One week we found out we were having a baby, and the next week, we found out we only had one income," Buksa, 40, said as his now 6-month-old daughter, Megan, peered about their living room in the Taylor County village of Rib Lake. Buksa is among a surging number of central Wisconsin residents, particularly men, who unexpectedly are becoming stay-at-home parents in the national recession. Their new role is a direct consequence of rising unemployment rates, which for March reached 12.1 percent in Wausau. Although men and women both have faced layoffs, industries that typically employ more men, such as housing and manufacturing, are struggling the most. The national unemployment rate among men was 10 percent in April, compared with 7.6 percent among women, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics. The rate for men has grown almost twice as rapidly as that of women since January. The recent growth in at-home fatherhood mirrors a larger social movement. With women taking on a larger role in the professional world in recent decades, experts say it's natural for more men to stay at home than in the past."

Poetic Justice: Briton Says She Helped Taint Rival

By John F. Burns - New York Times 5/25/2009

" A historic month for women in British poetry turned sour on Monday when the first woman in 301 years elected to Oxford University’s prestigious chair in poetry resigned and admitted what she had previously denied — that she had played a part in a covert effort to taint her main rival for the post with old allegations of sexual impropriety. Ruth Padel, 63, was chosen only 10 days ago for the Oxford post, which is regarded as second only to poet laureate among the formal distinctions for poets in Britain. Two weeks earlier, Carol Ann Duffy, 53, became Britain’s first female poet laureate, a post formally created in 1668. Ms. Padel’s admission that she sent e-mail messages to two reporters last month alerting them to allegations of sexual harassment against her main rival for the Oxford post, the Nobel literature laureate Derek Walcott, was a stunning turn in a saga of skullduggery that had opened a bitter schism in Britain’s literary world."

A divorced parent's dilemma: Leave kids to find work

By L.L. Braiser - Detroit Free Press - Michigan 5/26/2009

"Ray, a journeyman electrician, unemployed and desperate, left Macomb County two weeks ago for work in Oklahoma. It meant leaving his two daughters, the subjects of an upcoming custody battle with his soon-to-be ex-wife. "I would never, ever have left my children," he said. "But I had no work. I looked for seven months and couldn't get a callback. I couldn't sleep at night ... With no work, I wasn't doing my children any good." Ray, who asked that his last name not be used to protect his daughters' privacy, is among hundreds of divorced and divorcing parents in Michigan looking to leave the state to find work. In some cases, they also are seeking a reduction in the amount of child support they pay. The requests, once rare, are now becoming commonplace as Michigan's economy continues to crumble. For those who stay in Michigan, child support often comes out of their unemployment checks; the amount of child support withheld from unemployment payments jumped 135% in the last year."

Are Men the Second Sex Now?

By Christina Hoff Sommers -- Double X 5/20/2009

...."In Friedan's day, women were clearly the second sex. Not so today. Yes, many women are struggling with the challenge of combining family and work. But men do not have it easy either. They are increasingly less educated than women. They are bearing the brunt of the recession. The New York Times recently reported that "a full 82 percent of the job losses have befallen men." Reuters referred to the surging male unemployment rate as a "blood bath." Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's "FastStats" show that men are less likely than women to be insured—and more likely to drink, smoke, and be overweight. They also die six years earlier than women on average. Why are there no conferences, petitions, workshops, congressional hearings, or presidential councils to help men close the education gap, the health care gap, the insurance gap, the job-loss gap, and the death gap? Because, unlike women, men do not have hundreds of men's studies departments, research institutes, policy centers, and lobby groups working tirelessly to promote their challenges as political causes. ..."

Irish student hoaxes world's media with fake quote

By YahooFinance.com 5/11/2009

"When Dublin university student Shane Fitzgerald posted a poetic but phony quote on Wikipedia, he was testing how our globalized, increasingly Internet-dependent media was upholding accuracy and accountability in an age of instant news. His report card: Wikipedia passed. Journalism flunked. The sociology major's obituary-friendly quote -- which he added to the Wikipedia page of Maurice Jarre hours after the French composer's death March 28 -- flew straight on to dozens of U.S. blogs and newspaper Web sites in Britain, Australia and India. They used the fabricated material, Fitzgerald said, even though administrators at the free online encyclopedia twice caught the quote's lack of attribution and removed it. A full month went by and nobody noticed the editorial fraud. So Fitzgerald told several media outlets they'd swallowed his baloney whole."

In hard times, child support comes out of jobless check

By Karen Auge -- The Denver Post 5/9/2009

"As jobs evaporate in Colorado, the amount of child-support money coming from unemployment checks — rather than workers' wages — has nearly tripled, causing concern about what will happen when those checks run out. Child-support payments collected from unemployment checks soared 174 percent in the first three months of 2009 compared with the same period last year. Through March, the state child- support system had collected $3.5 million from unemployment compensation checks. For the same period last year, the amount was $1.26 million. In Denver alone, child support paid from unemployment checks has gone from $219,970 in the first four months of 2008 to $568,014 for the same period of this year, said Elizabeth Calvert, director of Denver's child-support division. Those figures don't represent additional collections of delinquent payments or new cases. Instead they reflect the simple fact that the number of people who are unemployed and paying child support has soared."

Surge in child support modifications

By Molly Hennessy-Fiske -- Los Angeles Times 5/3/2009

"California's rising unemployment rate is driving a steep increase in child support cases, as the newly jobless appeal for increases in monthly payments or argue that they can no longer afford the amounts ordered by the court. In Los Angeles County, about 450 new cases are filed each day, double the amount at this time last year. More than 3,000 calls come in daily -- up 25% -- increasingly from custodial parents asking child support staffers to crack down on deadbeats. The number of parents seeking help with child support modifications has tripled during the last month and a half, with some parents showing up at 5 a.m. to wait in line. "Can we handle it? No," said L.A. County Child Support Services Director Steven J. Golightly.
Family court judges and commissioners are calling it the worst avalanche of new cases they have seen in 30 years, many involving laid-off workers who have struggled to find new jobs."

Do Good Looks Get High School Students Good Grades?

By ScienceDaily.com 4/23/2009

The answers to these questions are found in a new study by researchers from the University of Miami Health Economics Research Group. The study is the first to demonstrate that non-cognitive traits play an important role in the assignment of grades in high school."

Aid program is getting few calls

By Alta Mayhugh --Williston Herald – North Dakota 4/30/2009

"A statewide program to aid parents who pay child support and have been laid off has been in place for about a month. But phones at the Williston Regional Child Support Enforcement Unit haven’t been ringing off the hook” yet. This shocks Ranee Kringen, administrator of the regional unit. “It really surprises me. I thought we’d be swamped,” Kringen said. ....The program offers parents temporary relief from court-ordered obligations, along with job placement help, states a news release from the North Dakota Department of Human Services. Mike Schwindt, director of the state Child Support Enforcement Division, said the parent receiving the child support continues to receive it under the program. However, it may be reduced because the other parent is out of a job. “But essentially that’s what happens in an intact family. If I lose my job, there’s less money coming into my family and the kids are impacted with that. The other part of this is, as soon as they get a job back, then the income goes back up, so that’s part of the proposal,” Schwindt said.

U.S. Workers' Wages Stagnate As Firms Rush to Slash Costs

By Annys Shin -- Washington Post 5/3/2009

"In December, Timothy Owner, a trombone player with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, called his landlord to tell her he might have trouble paying rent around May. He and the orchestra's 53 other full-time members, many of whom are paid less than $30,000 a year, had agreed to a month-long furlough. The furlough, which ended yesterday, was rough, Owner said. But he and other musicians acknowledged that the alternative could have been worse. "We're less unhappy if this means the orchestra will survive," he said. Across the country, workers' earnings are stagnating or, in some cases, declining. For many Americans, the setbacks are all the more troubling because they have lost so much wealth in recent months, with the value of their homes and retirement packages plummeting."

Backward on School Reform

By Washington Post Editorial 5/4/2009

"The D.C. Council wants to score points, and never mind the city's children. THE D.C. COUNCIL gave the mayor control of public schools because it rightly believed that vesting responsibility and accountability in one person was the only way to reverse decades of divided management and failed leadership. So it is curious that just two years into the reform efforts the council is proposing changes that would erode Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's control over the schools. The council needs to come to its senses and not retreat from a system that offers the children of this city the last, best chance for a better education."

Marriage And Family Stimulus Package Part I: Calling All Husbands And Fathers

By Darryl A. Cobbin -- Huffington Post 4/27/2009

"...Conversations about the impact the economy and unemployment, or the threat of it, are having on relationships are glaringly absent in the media, and it's high time we started a dialogue. Financial pressures wreak havoc on even the best of marriages. Divorce rates hover around 50% and money issues are among the top causes, so we're facing a tsunami of marital crises in this country. We have been enjoying years of prosperity and this is the first time in a long time many of us have had to do without. It's come at us like a body blow, and now we're facing a whole new reality. But we don't have to do it alone. We're all going through it. As a husband and father I always prided myself on being a good provider to my family. A great deal of my identity was tied up with my jobs, and being able to pay for the best "things" in life for my wife and three beautiful daughters. ..."

Md. Family of Five Laid to Rest

By Matt Zapotosky and Dan Morse -- Washington Post 4/25/2009

"Three black hearses led hundreds of cars yesterday on a procession through a town in Frederick County, creeping by stop signs draped with pastel ribbons and passing within view of a pale yellow house where bouquets and teddy bears have collected on the front porch. Each hearse carried a coffin. Inside one coffin were the bodies of two brothers, 5 and 4. Inside another was their mother and their 2-year-old sister. And in the third was Christopher Wood, 34, who last week killed them and then himself. "Nobody's ever going to know why," said Middletown resident Brenda Blank, who lived near the family, which had outwardly seemed untroubled. "We'll never have the answer."  But to some psychologists and criminologists, at least part of the explanation lies in the financial pressures bearing down on families across the nation. Increasingly, callers to suicide hotlines complain of money problems. For a troubled few, including Wood, the response to such stress is to kill their wives and children and then themselves, experts said."

Economy clogging Licking County Domestic Relations Court docket

By Russ Zimmer -- The Newark Advocate/Ohio 4/26/2009

"Financial stress can tear apart a family, but it doesn't always end there, said the judges of the Licking County Domestic Relations Court. Judges Craig Baldwin and Richard Wright said the court's docket is bursting with reactivated and stalled cases that likely are the results of the economic troubles of today. More cases means more time in court dealing with issues -- such as home, asset and debt division and child support that were hashed out between attorneys in years past -- and less time for the cases that involve young lives. "In the cases with the kids, I worry with more cases that the court can't spend the appropriate and meaningful time," Baldwin said. ....More disturbing are the cases in which one parent can't make the payments, but not out of laziness or poor financial prioritizing, he said. "What do you do? Put them in jail?" Baldwin asked. "They're not what jail was intended for."..."

As a Budget Gets Tighter, Police Battle Rising Crime

“...With the punishing economic downturn, police officers in many American cities are confronting what they describe as a surge in property crime. At the same time, many are being forced to improvise and make do with less: The recession is shrinking the finances of local governments, limiting the resources of police departments. ....It’s going to get worse,” Ms. Myers said. “You’ve got guys who have kids, who are on the hook for child support. If selling drugs is the only way they can get the money, they’re going to do it. It’s quick money. Even the ones that had jobs and got laid off and can’t find other jobs, if they got to sell drugs or rob somebody, they got to do what they got to do.”

Strapped parents try to cut child support

By Moni Basu -- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution -- 4/12/2009

"Norval Rhodes wants to do right by his 8-month-old son. He wants reliable day care, adequate health care and proper nutrition. When he separated from his wife last year, Rhodes agreed to pay $797 a month in child support. But in these lean times, that amount is no longer tenable for the personal trainer from Dunwoody, after clients dropped precipitously. Many of those clients are struggling small-business owners forced to cut back on services that suddenly seem like luxuries. “It’s been extremely difficult,” said Rhodes, 26, who would like to cut his child- support obligation almost in half. Economically challenged, thousands of Americans are facing the same predicament. Taking home a lesser salary or out of work altogether, parents can no longer afford to pay child support settled upon in more prosperous times."

With Son in Remission, Family Looks for Coverage

By New York Times 4/20/9

"When Danna Walker left the second-floor conference room and returned tearily to her desk — where someone had already deposited a packing box for her belongings — her first thought was not of the 14 years she had worked for DHL or the loss of her $37,000-a-year salary. It was of Jake. In three months, once her benefits ran out, how in the world would she provide health insurance for Jake, her mountainous, red-headed 21-year-old son, who had learned three years earlier that he had metastatic testicular cancer? Since the day she was laid off in October, Ms. Walker and her husband, Russ, co-owner of a struggling feed store here on the outskirts of Houston, have mounted a largely fruitless quest to find affordable coverage for Jake’s pre-existing condition."

Can Black men survive falling U.S. economy?

By Charlene Muhammad -- FinalCall.com - Illinois 4/10/2009

"A recent study indicates that of the major ethnic groups impacted by unemployment during the current U.S. recession, Black men have experienced the greatest job losses since the crisis officially began in November 2007. “What's missing from national media coverage of this recession is plainly a great deal of dishonesty about who's losing their jobs. This is overwhelmingly a blue collar, retail sales, low level recession,” said Andrew Sum, professor of economics and director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., which published the study. “The Impacts of the 2007-2009 National Recession on Male Employment in the U.S. through January 2009; The Massive Concentration of Job Losses Among Males Especially Black Men and Blue Collar Workers” tracked employment losses in the recession across gender groups of workers overall, and in the four major ethnicities—Asian, Black, Hispanic and White."

"The father of Slumdog Millionaire actress Rubina Ali has denied claims that he tried to sell his daughter for £200,000. Rubina, who played the young Latika in the Oscar-winning film, was reportedly put up for adoption illegally by her father Rafiq Qureshi for the six-figure sum. Reverse Discrimination Case Could Transform Hiring Procedures Nationwide

By FoxNews 4/18/2009

"Inside a burning building, fire doesn't discriminate between Matthew Marcarelli and Gary Tinney. Inside the New Haven Fire Department, however, skin color has put them on opposite sides of a lawsuit that could transform hiring procedures nationwide. This week, the Supreme Court will consider the reverse discrimination claim of Marcarelli and a group of white firefighters. They all passed a promotion exam, but the city threw out the test because no blacks would have been promoted, saying the exam had a "disparate impact" on minorities likely to violate the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

A Threat in Title IX

By Christina Hoff Sommers -- Editorial....Washington Post -- 4/14/2009
"What's good for women's basketball will be good for nuclear physics. To most Americans, that statement will sound odd. To President Obama, it apparently does not. In an October letter to women's advocacy groups, he declared that Title IX, the law that requires universities to give equal funding to men's and women's athletics, had made "an enormous impact on women's opportunities and participation in sports." If pursued with "necessary attention and enforcement," the same law could make "similar, striking advances" for women in science and engineering. ....Is it true that women are being excluded from academic science programs because of sexist bias? Some researchers agree that bias is to blame; others, perhaps a majority, suggest that biology and considered preference explain why men and women gravitate to different academic fields. But researchers who dispute the bias explanation played little or no role in the Title IX conferences, summits or congressional hearings. ..."

Job Promotions Are Unhealthy, Study Finds

By Robert Roy Britt -- Fox News -- 4/9/2009

"While some 13 million Americans are out of work these days, those still with jobs might have a strange new thing to worry about — getting a promotion can be bad for you, a new study suggests. British researchers found that when people get promoted, they suffer on average about 10 percent more mental strain and are less likely to find the time to go to the doctor. "Getting a promotion at work is not as great as many people think. Our research finds that the mental health of managers typically deteriorates after a job promotion, and in a way that goes beyond merely a short-term change," said Chris Boyce of the University of Warwick. "There are no indications of any health improvements for promoted people other than reduced attendance at GP surgeries [i.e. doctors visits], which may itself be something to worry about rather than celebrate."

More divorced Wisconsinites are using unemployment benefits to pay their child support

By New Richmond News - Wisconsin 4/13/2009

"Divorced Wisconsinites are not exempt from the recession and more of them are using unemployment benefits to pay their child support. State officials said almost $18 million in child support came through jobless pay in the first three months of this year. That’s more than twice the amount from a year ago. And it’s almost as much as the $22 million collected for all of 2008. The total amount of child support collected statewide was $951 million last year. That’s $22 million more than the previous year, which indicates that divorced kids generally didn’t suffer from the ravages of the economy."

EEOC Reverses Stance on Wal-Mart Class in Gender Bias Case

By Dan Levine, The Recorder-- Yahoo Finance 3/20/2009

"The federal government got off the sidelines Thursday to throw a few blocks for plaintiffs in a huge gender class action against Wal-Mart. The move is a reversal by the U.S. Equal Employment and Opportunity Commission, which had previously decided to sit the case out. Instead, the EEOC now opposes Wal-Mart's bid to try punitive damages on a case-by-case basis, according to an amicus curiae brief the commission filed with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. ...The lawsuit against Wal-Mart represents years of toil for federal judges. The plaintiffs say Wal-Mart uniformly paid women less than men across the country. Then-Northern District Judge Martin Jenkins signed off on the class certification in 2004."
