This is the first-ever report that attempts to measure the taxpayer costs of family fragmentation for U.S. taxpayers in all fifty states. Among its findings: Even programs that result in very small decreases in divorce and unwed childbearing could yield big savings for taxpayers."

BAUMGARDNER: Hard work pays off in stage five

By Julie Baumgardner --Washington Times 6/21/2009

"I recently ran into a friend I had not seen in a while. When I asked how life was treating her, she enthused, "We are finally empty-nesters. We are having so much fun! If everybody knew how good it was when the kids leave, nobody would get divorced!" It made me think about how many couples I know who have gotten caught up in the throes of children, career, etc. and ended up throwing in the towel on their marriage. The reality is marriage is hard work. Creating a lasting marriage takes skill, determination and chutzpah. Michele Weiner Davis, marriage therapist and author, has been observing relationships for years. She will be the first to tell you that marriages go through stages and predictable crises, but because people are unfamiliar with the normal hills and valleys of marriage, these predictable transitional periods often are misunderstood, causing overreactions. Ms. Weiner Davis says most marriages experience five stages."

EDITORIAL: Childless on Father's Day

By Washington Times -- Editorial 6/21/2009

"Some kids will be surprising their fathers with breakfast in bed this weekend, while others will present a gift inscribed with the phrase, "world's best dad." Some men, though, will only be reminded of the heartache from losing the opportunity to become fathers. They are the third victims of abortion. ...Arthur B. Shostak, professor of sociology at Drexel University, is one of a team of academics who took a hard look at men and abortion over a 20-year period. Their findings shatter the common myth that men are more likely to abandon women who get pregnant rather than support them. Most men in the survey reported that ending a pregnancy was a mutual decision, and only 5 percent didn't support the abortion. However, nearly half of single and divorced men said they had suggested getting married and having the baby. As many as 1 in 6 men are never told about a pregnancy or an eventual abortion. Almost 50 percent of men don't show up at an abortion clinic to accompany the mother on the day of the procedure, according to Mr. Shostak and his team. While in some cases these fathers might fit the stereotype of the rogue who is abandoning the mother of his child, a large percentage opposed the abortion or were too distraught to come along. Mr. Shostak's study found that more than 1 in 4 men equated abortion to murder. A little over 80 percent surveyed said they had already begun thinking about the child that might have been born, with 29 percent saying they had been dreaming about the child "frequently." Fully 68 percent said men involved in abortions "did not have an easy time of it," and 47 percent worried about having disturbing thoughts afterward. Mr. Shostak reported that many men began to cry during his interviews."

Charlie Crist and the Florida Cabinet, sitting Thursday as the Florida Board of Executive Clemency, that being on the sex offender list has caused him to lose at least 17 jobs in the last several years and that his four children, ages 7 to 14, have shared his stigma. McCranie, who now has a retail sales job in Panama City Beach, asked for a pardon to lift the cloud over his life caused what's known as a "Romeo and Juliet" case."

The "Milk" star has dropped out of two high-profile films: "The Three Stooges" and the crime thriller "Cartel," taking an extended leave from Hollywood so that he can focus on family matters. Sources have said the absence could last up to a year. In May, Penn filed for a request to dismiss his legal separation case from wife Robin Wright Penn. It is the second time he has rescinded divorce proceedings."

Father's Day: Why do we hold dads to a lower standard than moms?

By Chad Skelton -- Canada.com - Canada 6/15/2009

"With Father's Day less than a week away, millions of dads can look forward to hearing how great they are.Yet -- at the risk of inciting a lot of hate mail -- I can't help but wonder if at least some of that praise is probably undeserved. And that's because dads seem to be held to an entirely different -- and much lower -- standard than moms are. Think about it. When you call someone a "Great Dad", what exactly do you mean? Do you mean that they are a truly exceptional parent, going above and beyond the call? Or, instead, is "Great Dad" a term you give to any father who shows any interest in parenting at all? One who even occasionally does the jobs (changing diapers, feeding, storytime) that we usually think of as women's work? My wife is often told by her friends and family what a "great dad" I am. And as flattering and she, and I,  find that, it also kind of ticks her off. Because, aside from me, virtually no one ever tells her what a great mom she is."

Who needs two parents?

By Sabrina Broadbent The Guardian.co.uk – United Kingdom 6/13/2009

"Among my group of friends, I was an early casualty in the battle of love and family life. My children's father and I separated when we were 40 and they were still at primary school, a stage when not many of us were doing divorce. It caused a bit of a stir. Yet 10 years on, as we hit 50, a second wave of marital casualties is taking place. For once the clamour and chaos of family life receded, it seems that these parents found not peace but a sadness that would not go away. Was it worth staying together? Perhaps it's like this for every generation. Or maybe we are seeing the end of one kind of family life and the beginning of something better. For too long we have believed that marriage is good, divorce is bad. Two parents are better than one. Single mothers are a problem. But what if single parenting is more harmonious, more loving and more successful than the conventional model? What if two-parent families are a bit of a lie, a shop front for what is in effect single parenting? What if it's wiser not to wait for Mr Right, but to have a child on your own?"

FIU lab investigates the state of fatherhood

By Sissi Aguila -- FIU News - 6/15/2009

"Family roles have changed substantially since the 1950s. Mom now works outside the home. And dad is expected to be more involved in raising the kids. But as parental roles and responsibilities become less defined, psychologists question: Are there essential characteristics of fathering versus mothering? FIU’s Fatherhood Lab explores these issues and Psychology Professor Gordon Finley, who runs the lab, focuses specifically on how divorce impacts fathers and the development of their children. Finley has found that a father’s role is unique and far too often neglected by the family court system.  Using questionnaires and a retrospective technique in which he asked 1,989 young adults to think back on their relationship with their fathers, Finley found that children of divorce really miss their fathers. According to Finley, they are denied a relationship with them because of present-day family law and court practices. “Divorce marginalizes or severs a father’s relationship with his child,” he says. “In reality, the father becomes a visitor in his or her life. He is no longer a father in the very literal sense.”..."

Ada Fisher column: Too many unwed parents

By Dr. Ada FisherSalisbury Post – North Carolina 6/15/2009

"Sitting recently in the Rowan County courtroom waiting to hear the cases on paternity and child support, I was struck by the overflow of cases, the youth and unemployment of the parents in question and the unfairness of this system to children as well as taxpayers. Men should be outraged that they can be challenged for paternity with or without cause, without rights of recovery, even when they are not proven the father of the child in question. And taxpayers are being fleeced to support children for whom the parents often show little regard or responsibility in their conception and care. A young friend of mine was told by his then girlfriend that she was pregnant and he was the father. Raised to be responsible and believing he was the only one involved with the potential mother, he contributed more than $8,000 to the care and nurturing of the child, disregarding the admonition of his mother and me to get a paternity test. When he did finally get the DNA paternity test, it proved he was not the father of the child. He was stuck with a bill for a child he didn't create and no penalty accrued for such falsification by his accusers — the mother and DFCS. Where is equal justice? On the court docket were several young men being brought up for non-support of more than one child involving more than one woman. There seemed to be no sense of shame in the courtroom. One young man started shouting and cursing at his girlfriend until I intervened and told him to cool it. Several young women had more than one child by different men."

International child-custody cases spike

By The New Haven Register - CT 6/14/2009

"It was a globe-trotting romance: a handsome American working as a model in Italy falls in love with a Brazilian beauty studying fashion design in Milan. They marry in 1999, settle in the tony New Jersey shore town of Red Bank, and have a son. Four years later, the couple’s relationship begins to change from an international love affair into a diplomatic nightmare. The woman, Bruna Bianchi, took the couple’s son to visit her relatives in Brazil in 2004 but never returned. The boy’s father, David Goldman of Tinton Falls, N.J., has been battling to get his son back ever since. While the Goldman case has been prominent in recent news coverage, it isn’t the only dramatic custody case being fought across international borders. The U.S. State Department says such parental abductions involving American children are rising. There were more than 1,000 new cases of American children taken by a parent to another country last year — a 35 percent increase over 2007, according to the department."

Kelly Rutherford's Husband: I Wasn't Notified of Daughter's Birth

By Ken Lee -- People.com 6/9/2009

"The ill will from a divorce and custody battle between Kelly Rutherford and her husband has now apparently reached into the hospital delivery room. The Gossip Girl star welcomed her second child, daughter Helena, on Monday, but the actress's estranged husband, German entrepreneur Daniel Giersch, tells PEOPLE he was never notified of the birth, and instead read about it in online reports, some unfavorable toward him. "Media reports claiming that I neglected to attend my daughter's birth are total lies and fabrication," Giersch says in a statement. "I was never informed by Kelly about the birth of our daughter, nor was I invited to attend. In fact, I found out about it through Internet reports like everyone else. Although this sickens me, I am of course overjoyed that our baby was born healthy. I would've wanted nothing more than to hold our newborn daughter for a few moments, and I only seek to coparent both our children."

'Marital misconduct' could be financial factor in divorces

By Arizona Daily Star - Arizona 6/11/2009
"State lawmakers took the first steps Wednesday toward letting people seeking a divorce to gain a financial advantage by claiming marital misconduct. On a 4-2 margin, the Senate Committee on Public Safety and Human Services voted to repeal a law that requires judges to decide issues of alimony and child support "without regard to marital misconduct." The change would permit introduction of evidence of everything from domestic violence and cheating to wasting money."

Will Iran's 'Marriage Crisis' Bring Down Ahmadinejad?

By Azadeh Moaveni -- TIME 6/9/2009

"My friends Farhad and Mahnaz are the quintessential Iranian couple. They are both engineers with a shared passion for hiking and movies and have been smitten with each other for six years — but Farhad and Mahnaz can't afford to get married because even a one-bedroom apartment is beyond their reach, despite their both having decent middle-class jobs. This reality has preyed on their relationship, compelling them to consider leaving Iran. And they blame the government for their situation. "We aren't lazy, and we aren't aiming for anything so high," says Mahnaz. These days, the phrase "marriage crisis" pops up in election debates, newspapers and blogs and is considered by government officials and ordinary Iranians alike to be one of the nation's most serious problems. It refers to the rising number of young people of marrying age who cannot afford to marry or are choosing not to tie the knot. By official estimates, there are currently 13 million to 15 million Iranians of marrying age; to keep that figure steady, Iran should be registering about 1.65 million marriages each year. The real figure is closer to half that."

Success Against Poverty Requires Thousands of Fathers

By Bill Janis -- Opinion --Louisa Republican Committee- Virginia  6/7/2009

"...Social scientists and economists are an argumentative lot. They seldom agree about anything. But nearly all agree on one point: The decline of marriage, and of the two-parent family, is a major cause of child poverty, which, in turn, contributes to increased risks for children and greater demand for social services. The collapse of the family is a pandemic that poses a clear and present danger to all Virginians today.Approximately two-thirds of poor children live in single-parent homes. The collapse of marriage is also a major contributor to welfare dependence, crime, abuse, drugs, failure in school, and teen pregnancy. ..."

Law Hopes To Help Men Who Are Not Biological Fathers

By FOX2now.com - Missouri 6/9/2009

" In Missouri and some other states there's real, biological dad and there's legal, non-biological dad. Missouri lawmakers acknowledge the two aren't always the same. A law is now headed to the governor's desk. He paints houses. But a night out with the boys painted a messy future for Tony Galvin a married father of three, "She got my number from a friend of mine at the bar." Galvin says he never met her again, or saw her again. He adds he never had sex with her, "Nooo, never touched her." Perhaps, but two years later the woman had a baby boy, naming Tony the dad. Tony says he never knew about a paternity hearing, so when he didn't show, he defaulted. After his 30 days to appeal ran out, in the state's eyes, he "was" dad. Legal dad. Period. Tony says, frustrated, "They got nothing. And they're just 'you're the dad!'" But Tony got child support orders $674 a month. Prosecutors charged him with criminal non-support and the state took his driver's license. His life? "It ruined it, ruined it. Shut it down and stopped it right then. Of course it ruined my marriage for awhile. She's good now, but she wasn't then."Good now, thanks to genetic testing. What did the DNA test show? "That I was not the dad."..."

Simmering sex-ed battle heats up

By Kerry Benefield -- THE PRESS DEMOCRAT 6/7/2009

"A battle over sex education is under way in Sonoma County, pitting a longtime abstinence-only group against California Department of Education officials who say the group breaks state law when it teaches in the classroom. Among the players in the unfolding debate are the ACLU of Northern California, the California Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Free to Be, a Sonoma County group that has been promoting abstinence until marriage for 17 years. Caught in the middle are schools and districts that have hosted Free to Be speakers, including teens, to talk to students about the benefits of abstaining from sex until they are married. “The law specifically requires that all elements of sex education be balanced and accurate,” said Phyllida Burlingame, sex education policy director for the ACLU of Northern California, which has worked for months to keep Free to Be from giving presentations in public schools. “Students (need to) receive a consistent message that is based on science, that includes accurate, effective information,” she said."

Staying Together 'For The Sake Of The Kids' Doesn't Necessarily Help Them, Says Study

By ScienceDaily.com 5/30/2009

But when their parents frequently argue, young adults are significantly more likely to binge drink than other teenagers. They also tend to smoke, and their poor school grades are similar to those of their peers who don't have both biological parents at home."

Barack Obama, Stop Ruining My Marriage

By CNN.com 6/8/2009

...On Sunday, the New York Times did just that, with a story headlined "If They Can Find Time For A Date Night..." The gist: if the Obamas — with Mom committed to her various causes and Dad trying to save the free world — can still find time for each other, hey, lame husband sitting on the couch watching sports, time to step it up. The writer suggests that the President has placed an "elbow in the ribs of husbands," while Jon Stewart has joked, "Take it down a notch, dude."....Yes, daily down time and date nights are cathartic and healthy: my wife and I, working parents with two young children, have strived, with varying amounts of success, to find the right moments to put out an APB for a sitter. But in the relationship department, no husband or couple should ever wonder why they're not meeting a standard set by the Obamas."

Women May Not Be So Picky After All About Choosing A Mate

By ScienceDaily.com 6/4/2009

"Men and women may not be from two different planets after all when it comes to choosiness in mate selection, according to new research from Northwestern University. When women were assigned to the traditionally male role of approaching potential romantic partners, they were not any pickier than men in choosing that special someone to date, according to the speed dating study. That finding, of course, is contrary to well established evolutionary explanations about mate selection. An abundance of such research suggests that women are influenced by higher reproductive costs (bearing and raising children) than men and thus are much choosier when it comes to love interests."

U program helps fragile new families beat the odds

By Gail Rosenblum -- Minneapolis Star Tribune - Minnesota

"...."We found that most of these couples are in romantic relationships and aspire to stay together," said project director Bill Doherty, Ph.D., professor in the U of M's Department of Family Social Science. The federally and state-funded "Minnesota Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood Initiative," was built upon the national Fragile Families Project, which Doherty said, "was a turning point in the way many of us think about unmarried, urban young couples with children. That project put to bed the notion that fathers don't give a rip and women don't know who the fathers are. "Still, the gap between aspirations and ability to carry out those aspirations is pretty high. We designed our project to fill that gap."...."

Cheney on gay marriage: 'Freedom for everyone'

By Breitbart.com 6/1/2009

"Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday he supports gays being able to marry but believes states, not the federal government, should make the decision. "I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone," Cheney said in a speech at the National Press Club. "I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish." Cheney, who has a gay daughter, said marriage has always been a state issue. "And I think that's the way it ought to be handled today, that is, on a state-by-state basis. Different states will make different decisions. But I don't have any problem with that. I think people ought to get a shot at that," he said."

Make-believe marriage consequences are real

By Dowagiac Daily News - MI  5/28/2009

"....Without a marriage ceremony, neither Melissa nor Nathan could count on equitable distribution of assets acquired during their cohabitation. There is likewise no basis for claiming separate maintenance when the live-in arrangement is terminated. (In other jurisdictions separate maintenance might be called alimony). Without marriage, one partner might not have any say in how the other partner is treated in case of disability nor even be able to visit their partner in the hospital. Without marriage, there is little or no basis for listing the other partner on employer health plans nor for claims to share in retirement benefits.
Neither would the lack of a marriage ceremony free Nathan from parental responsibilities in the event children were born to the live-in arrangement. The courts can order DNA testing to establish paternity and then order paternal monetary support of the children. Only 11 states and the District of Columbia recognize common law marriage."

Divorce courts harass our troops and small businesses

By Hans Bader -- Examiner.com – District of Columbia 5/25/2009

"Memorial Day is an opportunity to thank our troops, and open our eyes to the disgraceful way they are treated by divorce courts. The bias that divorce courts in my home state of Virginia exhibit against males, people who start small businesses, and breadwinner spouses in general has been ably chronicled by Richard Crouch, a prominent family lawyer, in the Virginia state bar publication Family Law News. But what ashames me most as a lawyer is how divorce courts routinely flout our troops’ rights under federal law. Crouch notes that Virginia courts ignore federal law by ordering members of the military to share their pensions with spouses who divorced them after even short marriages: “Something everybody learned early on is that a military wife had to have ten years of marriage to the service member overlapping ten years of military service to divide the pension. However, the Virginia Court of Appeals has adopted the rule that this statutory limitation in 10 USC 1408 limits only direct payment by the military of the former spouse’s half of the pension. Thus a service member can be required by a Virginia court to split his or her military retirement with the former spouse even if it was less than a ten year marriage. Cook v. Cook, 18 Va. App. 726, 446 SE2d 894 (1994).” This contempt for the legal rights of divorced soldiers matters a lot, because soldiers have fairly high divorce rates, thanks to the stresses and strains of military life, such as unforeseen deployments overseas. Usually, it is the wife, not the husband, who initiates the divorce (two-thirds of divorces in America are initiated by the  wife, not the husband, although male spouses of female soldiers also initiate many divorces. Most divorces are no-fault divorces. By the way, I am not divorced)."

Single mothers and the baby boom

By Cathy Young -- Boston Globe -- 5/26/2009

"IN THE past 10 years, with my biological clock winding down and no husband in sight, I have been asked quite a few times if I had considered having a child on my own. What used to be scandalous is now practically a conventional life choice. This is borne out by a new report released recently by the National Center for Health Statistics. Nearly 40 percent of all babies born in the United States in 2007, up from 34 percent in 2002 and 18 percent in 1980, were born to unmarried women. While unwed childbearing is much more common in black and Hispanic communities, the trend cuts across racial lines; moreover, it is driven primarily by women in their 20s and 30s, not teens. Should we treat single motherhood as "the new normal" or as a problem that needs to be addressed? And what about the fathers? For some, the growth of single-mother families is a sign of female empowerment. If children without fathers fare worse than children in two-parent families, say defenders of single mothers, the answer is better pay for women and better social programs. Yet even in Sweden with its generous welfare state, a major 2003 study found that children raised in single-parent homes were at significantly higher risk for addictions and serious psychiatric problems."..."

More parents share the workload when mom learns to let go

By Sharon Jayson, USA TODAY 5/4/2009

"Equality is gaining ground at homes across the USA, but the move toward parity leaves some mothers in a quandary; they're ready to share the workload with their partners, but to do that, they'll also have to come to terms with the loss of hierarchy at home. "Women who want to create this sometimes don't appreciate the level at which they must let go," says Amy Vachon of Watertown, Mass. She and her husband, Marc, have become the standard-bearers for a philosophy called "equally shared parenting."..."

Iran: 80% of petitions for divorce filed by women

By Payvand Iran News 5/17/2009

"A new research conducted by Shahid Beheshti University showed that 80% of petitions for divorce were filed by women in the first five years of marriage. Head of the research group Majid Abhari blamed women's power of attorney in divorce as the main reason behind such a great rate of petitions filed by women. According to the research, unemployment, poverty, addiction, and consequently lack of mutual understanding are the biggest cause of discords in marriage. Abhari called divorce the greatest social problems and said that getting married without knowing each other well, sometimes based on puppy loves, disregarding cultural, financial, and religious differences, and seeking to live in the lap of luxury are the major factors in marital breakdown."

Massive Tax Increase and Marriage Penalty from Obama

By Hans Bader -- Open Market.org 5/12/2009

"Obama’s proposed tax increases create a massive financial penalty for married couples, by subjecting them to much higher income taxes than if they had chosen to live together without getting married. (Unmarried people voted decisively for Obama. But as the Associated Press notes, “married people tend to favor” Republicans like McCain). Under the tax increases contained in Obama’s recent budget proposals, a married couple making $232,000 a year would be in a higher tax bracket than many unmarried couples making $370,000 a year. Simply by getting married, a man and woman making $170,000 each would be pushed up from their current level of 28 percent to 36 percent. But an unmarried couple making $340,000 a year ($170,000 each) would be taxed at 28 percent. And a married couple making $380,000 would be taxed at 39.6 percent — not counting certain adjustments that bring the rate to 40.7 percent. (That’s just the federal standard rate. You have to add to that state income taxes (up to 10.3 percent), and federal self-employment taxes, which many small business owners pay — which could result in marginal rates of well over 60 percent)."

Number of Unwed Mothers Has Risen Sharply in U.S.

By Rob Stein and Donna St. George -- Washington Post 5/14/2009

"....The number of children being born out of wedlock has risen sharply in recent years, driven primarily by women in their 20s and 30s opting to have children without getting married. Nearly four out of every 10 births are now to unmarried women. "It's been a huge increase -- a dramatic increase," said Stephanie J. Ventura of the National Center for Health Statistics, which documented the shift in detail yesterday for the first time, based on an analysis of birth certificates nationwide. "It's quite striking." Although the report did not examine the reasons for the increase, Ventura and other experts cite a confluence of factors, including a lessening of the social stigma associated with unmarried motherhood, an increase in couples delaying or forgoing marriage, and growing numbers of financially independent women and older and single women deciding to have children on their own after delaying childbearing. "I think this is the tipping point," said Rosanna Hertz, a professor of sociology and women's studies at Wellesley College. "This is becoming increasingly the norm. The old adage that 'first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby carriage' just no longer holds true.".."

Couples with children outside wedlock 'should be married by the State'

By John Bingham --Telegraph.co.uk - United Kingdom 4/30/2009

"Couples who have children outside wedlock should be automatically married by the State to discourage them from splitting up, a key government adviser is proposing. Prof Julian Le Grand, the architect of a clutch of New Labour policies such as baby bonds, is calling for marriage to be the legal "default" setting for new parents. Without having to undergo a public ceremony or take any vows, they should simply be regarded as married in law as soon as the child's birth is registered, Prof Le Grand, Tony Blair's former Downing Street health adviser, said. Those who later decide to separate would have to go to court to seek a divorce in exactly the same way as a couple who had married formally in church or a register office. The London School of Economics professor, who is also chairman of Health England, argued that the idea would make family units more secure."

Marine From Montgomery Is Killed

The Age of the American Lust Child

By Armstrong Williams -- Opinion,The CuttingEdgeNews.com 4/27/2009

"Recently that the Centers for Disease Control has estimated that nearly forty percent of U.S. births in 2007 occurred outside of wedlock. That number is overall for the nation. It is one thing when teenagers and members of lower socioeconomic classes fall prey to this phenomenon. But the reality of out-of-wedlock births at such a high rate across the social gamut suggests that the problem has spread much wider than ever could have been imagined. This alarming number of out-of-wedlock births across age and socioeconomic sectors signals nothing less than the wholesale disintegration of our American family. Welcome to the dawn of the age of the American Lust Child. Some would question why it matters. What does society care whether or not children are born to wedded mothers at all? After all if the parents are together but not married, or single but wealthy enough to support the child, then no big deal right? Wrong. There is more to raising children than just food, clothing and shelter. There is the quintessential non-material connection that two parents provide that cannot be quantified in dollars and cents, but are just as essential for that child to grow up and become a productive member of society."

Marriage And Family Stimulus Package Part I: Calling All Husbands And Fathers

By Darryl A. Cobbin -- Huffington Post 4/27/2009

"...Conversations about the impact the economy and unemployment, or the threat of it, are having on relationships are glaringly absent in the media, and it's high time we started a dialogue. Financial pressures wreak havoc on even the best of marriages. Divorce rates hover around 50% and money issues are among the top causes, so we're facing a tsunami of marital crises in this country. We have been enjoying years of prosperity and this is the first time in a long time many of us have had to do without. It's come at us like a body blow, and now we're facing a whole new reality. But we don't have to do it alone. We're all going through it. As a husband and father I always prided myself on being a good provider to my family. A great deal of my identity was tied up with my jobs, and being able to pay for the best "things" in life for my wife and three beautiful daughters. ..."

Why women are leaving men for other women

By CNN.com 4/23/2009

"Lately, a new kind of sisterly love seems to be in the air. In the past few years, Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon left a boyfriend after a decade and a half and started dating a woman (and talked openly about it). .....Statistics on how many women have traded boyfriends and husbands for girlfriends are hard to come by. Although the U.S. Census Bureau keeps track of married, divorced, single, and even same-sex partners living together, it doesn't look for the stories behind those numbers. But experts like Binnie Klein, a Connecticut-based psychotherapist and lecturer in Yale's department of psychiatry, agree that alternative relationships are on the rise. "It's clear that a change in sexual orientation is imaginable to more people than ever before, and there's more opportunity -- and acceptance -- to cross over the line," says Klein, noting that a half-dozen of her married female patients in the past few years have fallen in love with women. "Most are afraid that if they don't go for it, they'll end up with regrets." Feminist philosopher Susan Bordo, Ph.D, a professor of English and gender and women's studies at the University of Kentucky and author of "Unbearable Weight: Feminism, Western Culture, and the Body," also agrees that in the current environment, more women may be stepping out of the conventional gender box."

David Caruso sued by ex-girlfriend

By MSNBC.com 4/9/2009

"David Caruso’s ex-girlfriend, Liza Marquez, has sued the “CSI: Miami” star for damages based upon allegations of fraud, intentional infliction of emotional distress, breach of contract and six additional charges, according to court papers acquired by Access Hollywood. .....In a statement to Access on Thursday, a rep for Caruso responded to the claims. “Last month David became concerned about the welfare of his children and sought court assistance to redefine David’s and Liza’s custodial schedules,” the rep said in the statement. “It now appears that Liza has decided to retaliate by raising false claims against David, which David finds unfortunate since these claims will divert the parties’ and the court’s attention away from the best interests of the children.”

Innocent Marine freed after 9 years in prison

By Gidget Fuentes - Marine Times 4/20/2009

"A decade ago, while serving as a military police officer at Camp Pendleton, Calif., Foster told his company commander that he would refuse nonjudicial punishment over allegations made by his estranged wife accusing him of raping her in 1995 and assaulting her from 1994 to 1998. Her rape claim surfaced amid a bitter divorce and custody fight over their two young sons. Foster, now 35, figured he’d be acquitted at court-martial, where he was charged with rape, aggravated assault and making threats. What Foster didn’t know was that about 90 percent of all general courts-martial end in convictions, either from the jury or through plea agreements, according to annual reports from the Navy’s Judge Advocate General. He also didn’t count on a shoddy defense and prosecution, which convinced a jury to sentence him to 17 years in prison, bust him to private and cap it all with a dishonorable discharge.

Smile! It could predict success of your marriage

By Clara Moskowitz MSNBC.com 4-16-2009

"If you want to know whether your marriage will survive, look at your spouse's yearbook photos. Psychologists have found that how much people smile in old photographs can predict their later success in marriage. In one test, the researchers looked at people's college yearbook photos, and rated their smile intensity from 1 to 10. None of the people who fell within the top 10 percent of smile strength had divorced, while within the bottom 10 percent of smilers, almost one in four had had a marriage that ended, the researchers say."

He was born 16 weeks prematurely and weighed just 1 pound. Out-of-wedlock births hit record high

By CNN.com 4/8/2009

""Had she been born a generation earlier, Kim Hoffman might have had a shotgun wedding. As it turned out, she and Steve Miller took the time to plan their dream nuptials -- outdoors, on an organic farm, and with their 10-month-old daughter in tow. A pre-marriage birth certainly wasn't what her father wanted for his only daughter, said Hoffman, of Oakland, California. But seven months into her relationship with Miller, the unplanned pregnancy simply changed life's course. "We would have headed down this path. The pregnancy just accelerated things," she said of the couple's cohabitation, the birth of Sadie and their 2005 wedding. "It was the way it was meant to be." Along with magazine-cover grabbers like Angelina Jolie and Bristol Palin, Hoffman, today a 39-year-old mother of three, is part of a now record-breaking trend of women who give birth outside of wedlock."

Excerpt: Parents, your kids aren't that special

By CNN.com 3/23/2009

"Below is an excerpt from CNN commentator Jack Cafferty's new book, "Now or Never." Jack appears daily in "The Situation Room" on CNN from 4 to 7 p.m. ET. I never presumed to have any more answers about being a parent than anybody else. There are no perfect parents, perfect kids, perfect families -- only degrees of dysfunction. You get up in the morning and do the best you can. At the end of the day you say, "Okay, that wasn't so bad, let's try it again tomorrow." Some of my instincts were pretty good and some of them were awful. I did stay engaged and didn't say to hell with being a father when my first marriage ended. ...."

US births break record; 40 pct out-of-wedlock

By Mike Stobbe, AP Medical Writer, Yahoo News – 3/19/2009

"Remember the baby boom? No, not the one after World War II. More babies were born in the United States in 2007 than any other year in the nation's history — and a wedding band made increasingly little difference in the matter. The 4,317,119 births, reported by federal researchers Wednesday, topped a record first set in 1957 at the height of the baby boom. ....The birth rate rose slightly for women of all ages, and births to unwed mothers reached an all-time high of about 40 percent, continuing a trend that started years ago. More than three-quarters of these women were 20 or older. For a variety of reasons, it's become more acceptable for women to have babies without a husband, said Duke University's S. Philip Morgan, a leading fertility researcher."

When Men Lose Their Jobs

By Emily Bazelon -- SLATE -- 3/12/2009

"If you've been laid out and laid off by the downturn and your spouse is still working, how much do you rearrange your family life? Do you assume the hit you've taken is temporary and leave all the old roles in place? Or do you concede semipermanence and take on more household duties, never mind what went before or what it all means? That's a question more couples are facing because the layoffs, so far, are largely affecting men. I put out a call a couple of weeks ago asking for their stories. I wanted to know, specifically, how couples handling a husband or wife's unemployment are also handling what's called the second shift—the work we do at either end of the day to keep our kids and our homes running. The responses suggest that, possibly, the interplay between this recession and "who does what" in the house may be more complex than past data about the behavior of unemployed men suggest."
